At the U.S. Academy, ground school is intertwined with flight training. Cadets will go to ground school to learn certain skills and once proficient, they will get to apply the information they just learned in the aircraft. This process repeats for each stage of schooling, from Private Pilot, to Instrument Rating, all the way to our Flight Instructor courses.
FAA ground school facilities
Ground school training in the United States happens within the Academic Building of our Florida Academy.
We have eight multimedia-equipped classrooms of various sizes where full-time academic instructors teach classes.
Our Academic Building includes a Learning Resource Center (LCR) which is open every day of the school week and a Certified Flight Instructor is available during normal business hours to advise our cadets. It is designed for individual group studying, student tutoring, and viewing of DVD training materials. Additional resources such as books, magazines, and aircraft parts are available. There is also a Study Hall available to students wishing to study in a quiet environment.
The Academy administers the FAA Airman Knowledge Test for all courses offered at the school. For this there is a Testing Center consisting of 10 computerized testing stations and a proctor station.
The Orlando Sanford International Airport has an FAA control tower on airport property and four runways with the main runway being 11.000 X 150 ft. Airport equipment includes Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), GPS Approaches, High Intensity Runway Lighting, a Non-Directional Beacon, a modern terminal with complete ground handling equipment, an AWOS weather reporting system, and many other enhancements. The airspace surrounding the airport is designated as Class “C”.
The Operations Center consists of offices, a dispatch center, pre-flight planning areas, post-flight briefing areas, weather service computers and phones, student services offices, and our Sky Shop that carries all books and supplies required for students attending the Academy.
