Category Manager - Crawley

Primary purpose of the role

  • The primary role of the Category Manager is to develop and execute procurement strategies to align with the strategic goals of the company, driving value through supplier partnerships, agreements and active supplier management.

Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to:

  • Working with the Head of Procurement and other key departments, develop the Procurement Strategy for the category and ensure the strategy is communicated effectively within the business.

  • Implement and maintain new policies, systems and procedures and ensure that best practice Procurement processes are continually developed and used across all aspects of the role and reflected with the supply base.

  • Develop visual metrics and KPI’s to report and measure the performance of the category and effectiveness of cost reduction and value add activities.

  • Perform on-going category research to ensure a clear understanding of the market supplier landscape and the relationship and alignment of its capabilities to the business requirements.

  • Play a key role in formulating and implementing the Make/Buy strategy for the appropriate product area(s)

  • Evaluate potential suppliers and drive the supplier selection process

  • Negotiate and implement supply agreements with suppliers in line with business requirements

  • Manage the overall relationship with suppliers, delivering a robust supplier management program that can be delivered on an on-going basis.

  • Continually strive to improve supplier performance through internal feedback and a close working relationship with suppliers and both internal and external customers

  • Identification and delivery of cost reduction opportunities and measures to reduce the operational and overhead cost base in line with the e3 Program

  • Effectively manage risk and develop mitigation strategies for products within area of responsibility including management of any risk mitigation budgets

  • Manage the introduction of new products or services to ensure a smooth transition into the business

  • Support the decision making process of the Procurement team in achieving overall business objectives. Production of management reports to communicate supplier performance and Agreement status and creation of business cases to support the supplier selection process.

  • Create and maintain Supplier contracts within the ERP system


Key competencies required

  • A good understanding of business finance, contracts, materials, technologies and services, ideally within a commercial aerospace environment.

  • Ability to be pro-active, setting working independently to deadlines, both leading and as part of cross functional teams.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interface and communicate effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders across all levels of the business and the organization

  • Able to concurrently address and manage multiple projects and suppliers

  • Strong influencing skills and relationship management skills

  • Ability to work in context of major programmes and as part of a complex fast paced environment
  • Able and willing to travel as required for supplier management

Experience and knowledge required

  • Ideally membership of an appropriate professional body, e.g. CIPS, a graduate or equivalent with a strong track record in the Procurement function gained over a significant number of years.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading, managing and developing people or able to demonstrate the right basic skills to develop in this area.

  • Skilled negotiator with experience in project management and supplier performance.

  • Demonstrated experience in formulating and executing strategies

  • Experience of using an ERP or Contract Management System
