The Opportunity

L3 CTS is seeking an EASA-qualified Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE) to join our industry-leading Flight Training Team in New Zealand. The role will promote, develop and maintain the highest standards of training delivery in accordance with current approved syllabi. It will involve providing guidance, mentoring and training/examination for Flight Instructors, in addition to delivering flight instruction and examination assessments for cadets.

Our Company

At Hamilton Airport, L3 CTS Airline Academy provides training facilities and accommodation for approximately 300 cadet pilots. Our purpose-built training centre houses nine briefing rooms, 10 lecture rooms, a crew room, two Diamond DA 42 fixed base simulators, planning and operations facilities, as well as a large suite of management and administration offices.  L3 CTS’ airline-oriented approach to training is reflected in the design of the facilities as well as the training delivery systems that are in place.

We also have our own on-site aircraft maintenance facilities that support our fleet of 41 training aircraft.  The fleet includes 8 Garmin 1000 equipped DA42 Twinstars, 17 Garmin 1000 Cessna 172s, 2 analogue Cessna 172s, and 14 DA20 Katana aircraft.  With this fleet we train aspiring professional pilots from around the world for a wide variety of partner airlines, as well as individual retail customers seeking careers in the exciting, challenging and dynamic commercial aviation industry.

  • Uphold flight safety in every aspect of training and encourage a ‘just culture’ in flight safety amongst colleagues and trainees
  • Deliver ground and flight training as per licenses, approvals, rating and privileges held and provide examiner services as required by the company
  • Act as Flight Instructor and Flight Check Instructor/ Examiner (FCI-IR & FCI-CPL) providing relevant services as required
  • Develop courseware, training materials and other training media/tools and support other business development activities
  • Deliver planned Flight Instructor courses toward rating issue in line with an FI development upgrade program and in accordance with the company manual
  • Act as a mentor to Flight Instructors and cadets by demonstrating professionalism and adherence to SOPs, and provide constructive feedback following progress and proficiency tests
  • Support the CFI and DCFI with regards to cadet and instructor performance management. Report or raise concerns about both cadets and instructors and participate in any investigation when necessary
  • In partnership with other members of the Standards team, ensure instructor standards are monitored to ensure effective delivery of approved syllabi through sample checks of training records, ground briefings, simulator and flight events
  • Ensure accurate and correct documentation related to flight instructors and cadets are maintained to meet the requirements of NAA regulatory audits
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of cadet and flight related administration and records including planning for examinations for assigned cadets. Conduct periodic cadet logbook audits and validate completion of flight instructor’s training documents
  • Maintain personal license, class one medical and fit and proper person status as required by NZ CAA

Essential qualifications and experience

  • EASA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Instrument Rating
  • Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE) Qualification
  • Hold a current Class 1 medical
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, the appropriate licences or regulatory equivalent as stipulated by the relevant approving authority (e.g. CAAS, HKCAD, NZ CAA, EASA)
  • Experience at a senior level within an ab-initio integrated and modular pilot training environment
  • Minimum 3000 hours total flight time
  • Minimum 2000 hours flight instruction experience


  • Hold NZ or EASA ATPL
  • EASA & NZ Flight Examiner
  • AQC / MCC Course Completion Certificate
  • 200 hours PIC IFR
  • Multi Engine Instructor Rating
  • Airline or commercial transport pilot experience
  • Minimum 100 hours flight testing experience as a Flight Examiner
