Manager, Hardware Engineering - Training Systems


Overview of the role: Manage the Hardware Engineering team to deliver robust engineering solutions to cost, quality and schedule targets. A key aspect of the role is the ability to work cross functionally and within the wider matrix organisation to develop and implement a high performance culture of engineering excellence, delivery to challenging targets and continuous improvement.

Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to:

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive work environment to company policies and procedures.
  • Optimize engineering delivery across the organization for programs and projects through effective forward planning and resource management.
  • Manage system planning (MRP) and inventory to agreed program and business objectives to deliver to internal and external customer requirements E.g. NWC inventory targets and customer program schedules.
  • Deliver financial objectives through OPEX budget management and program/project scoping and resource management with robust progress review and counter measure implementation for variances.
  • Ensure the quality of engineering output through application of internal and external standards, design scope and review, robust change management and continuous improvement analysis.
  • Working with functional leads, develop and implement strategic goals, resource plans and projects to deliver business unit strategy.
  • Working with functional leads, develop and implement best practice processes and toolsets for engineering and business tools Eg CAD, MRP interface, Design for manufacture approach
  • Develop a high performance culture through leadership behaviors, coaching, positive feedback and tools such as reward programs, performance management and objective setting as part of formal and informal reviews

Essential skills and experience:

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to lead and network with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proactive, autonomous and innovative approach to engineering output and strategy
  • Focus on execution to deliver business results – ensuring strategy and plans are cascaded and implemented with SMART goals
  • Data driven and methodical approach with standardised, visual processes for tactical, strategic and decision making activity
  • Robust people management skills with the ability to lead cultural change and motivate teams to embed a CI approach
  • Ability to travel to all sites globally within the portfolio


Essential qualifications and experience:

  • Degree Level Qualification in appropriate subject (manufacturing/engineering/science)
  • Extensive experience in engineering leadership roles (desirable experience of operating in a cross functional and matrix organisation working)
  • Solid experience in aviation/aerospace environment and aircraft systems desirable
  • Excellent computer literacy: CAD / PLM / ERP / MRP in manufacturing environment

Reports to:      Function: VP of Sector Engineering; BU: Director on leadership team

Manages:        Engineering team leaders / Specialists
