Operations Manager - Cranfield

This role has overall responsibility for the running of the Operations Control Centre at our Cranfield Training Centre, which opened in 2019. Including the safe arrival, turnaround and departure of aircraft and crew.

Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to:


  • Development and adherence to a ‘Safety first culture’ throughout the Training Centre.
  • The Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Operations Control Centre, ensuring that the Training team has the right aircraft in the right place at the right time, with the right crew, ready to depart.
  • Accountability for safety and security within their area, must effectively plan and manage the use of resources and ensure compliance with processes and procedures.
  • Management of the Operations team (currently three Operations Controllers) to ensure efficient delivery of the daily flight training programme.
  • In liaison with duty Training representatives, have ultimate oversight of each event to ensure all safety, compliance and security measures are in place and adhered to, in accordance with current approvals and national aviation requirements.
  • Daily Operations Meeting to discuss weather related and maintenance issues, oversee all major operational decisions and devise solutions to problems that arise. Advise other departments of operational issues that may affect safety or productivity.
  • Work closely with the Scheduling team to pro-actively manage the daily flying programme, optimising the resources and trainee pool available in line with the required course objectives, whilst meeting company flight time limitations. To include weather-driven changes, invoking standby events; substituting trainees and FI’s in the case of sickness or no shows; amending schedule to accommodate re-fuelling opportunities.
  • Communicate any changes with the duty Training management and Instructors and make sure all trainees are conversant with their current ground and flight training schedules.
  • Liaise with L3Harris Engineering and Maintenance Supervisor and partner MRO’s to ensure all aircraft are airworthy, respond to defects, planning line and base check maintenance at operationally efficient times. Objective is to minimise disruption to the flight programme, acknowledging safety first.
  • Obtain and arrange for the display and dissemination of information such as weather, Notams, operational warnings, that are required for the safe and efficient operation of the flying programme.
  • Arrange for the dissemination of current operational matters, both those generated by the Company and by Cranfield Airport, to Instructors and Trainees
  • Book, amend or cancel training slots with ATC, as required
  • Maintain accurate and up to date aircraft records such as technical logs or such electronic records that may be in use in future
  • Book land away in accordance with approved list
  • Ensure all aircraft are suitably parked/hangared, with covers on and locks installed, at the end of each day – or during the day as required
  • Arrange for and supervise the re-fueling and de-icing of aircraft as required.
  • Acquire and maintain all hardware, systems and software required to deliver seamless training delivery, with minimum disruption
  • FNPT2 simulator – liaison with maintenance to ensure down-time is minimized and scheduled maintenance is undertaken.
  • Line management and development of all reporting staff.
  • Ensure that Ops area is kept clean and tidy and fit for purpose.
  • Devise and manage annual budget for Ops supplies.
  • Ordering and maintaining Ops supplies, as required to fulfill training operation, and in line with agreed budget
  • Maintain Stores – stock check of provisions and keeping it orderly
  • Key SAP user, responsible for management of existing and new suppliers, raising Preqs and undertaking GRN (Good Receipt Notice) as well as training the Ops team to ensure redundancy across all processes at all times
  • Act as first point of contact for evening and weekend general site maintenance.
  • Working with L3Harris Engineering and Maintenance Supervisor, ensure aircraft to be used for tests fully meet the minimum standards and maintain acceptable paperwork.
  • Update operational documents, such as CAA AIPs, AICs, ANO and Jeppesen charts, in hard copy or electronic format as required.
  • Own and maintain the Cranfield Operations Procedures Manual.
  • General office duties.
  • Site maintenance duties as appropriate.
  • Continually assess and recommend to Training Management ways in which the function of the Operations department could be developed and enhanced




Essential skills and experience:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in aviation Operations supervisory or management role
  • PPL / TRAINING QUALIFICATIONS – Airline Operations and Dispatch Training course, covering ICAO Ops Officer syllabus.
  • Experience of running and developing a team
  • Be able to remain calm under pressure and when working to deadlines
  • Previous experience of scheduling and rostering ideal
  • Strong leader, demonstrating logical and decisive thinking
  • Have good analytical and planning skills
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Be quick thinking and able to devise alternative solutions to problems
  • Be able to both lead and work well within a team
  • Be reliable and conscientious
  • Be capable of making sound commercial recommendations and decisions
  • Competent with MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Ability to work in a pressured and dynamic environment and prioritise tasks where necessary
  • Be flexible when late changes are necessary
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Willingness to approach any task with enthusiasm
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • International outlook, ability to deal comfortably with various cultures is required
