Technical Author

L3Harris is seeking to recruit a Technical Author to join our Technical Publications team. As part of the team, you will be responsible for creating technical publications for our range of flight training products, enabling our customers to operate and maintain their devices safely and effectively.

We have an exciting opportunity to evolve our IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) and supporting materials to meet the future needs of our customers. As well as delivering on existing contracts, you will help us to optimise our processes, leverage existing digital product data and explore the potential of disruptive technologies like augmented reality and big data to deliver a richer customer experience.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to produce concise and accurate operating and maintenance manuals from a variety of source information, including engineering drawings. You might also have a flair for web design, user interfaces or digital design aesthetics.

We are looking for a self-starter, who can deliver within fixed timescales and budgets, under minimal supervision. Appropriate training and support will be provided where required. Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to:

  • Analysis of aircraft and equipment manufacturer’s data
  • Creation and modification of operating and maintenance documentation
  • Creation and modification of illustrations, images, 3D models, animations and movies
  • Creation and modification of interactive electronic technical manuals
  • Liaising with internal customers and subject matter experts
  • Maintaining plans/schedules and reporting progress
  • Interfacing with customers


Essential skills and experience:

Previous experience of:

  • Technical authoring
  • Microsoft Office, beyond just the basics
  • HTML based editing tools
  • XML based editing tools
  • Image editing tools
  • Website creation to W3C standards

Preferably with prior experience of:

  • Arbortext
  • Adobe Dreamweaver
  • Creo Illustrate
  • Simplified English
  • ATA chapters
  • Document revision control
  • SAP or Oracle ERP
  • Windchill, Teamcenter or other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools
  • Integrated logistic support (ILS) or through life support engineering principles
  • Agile methodologies
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

Qualification and educational requirements:

  • A suitable Degree (or equivalent) with Maths, Science or Engineering content or a significant appropriate experience in industry
  • Preferably an engineering background.
