Engineer Story: Brian Baker

Working for L3Harris brings out the most out of people as it is a challenging but rewarding experience. As a Senior Principle Software Engineer my responsibility consists of writing software, training and leading the team in implementing new technology to bring to our customers. Keeping up to speed with the forever-changing world of technology allows us to achieve the results we are looking for. In recent years, we have increased the amount of new technology we bring in, as a result we are seeing our development velocity increase dramatically.

Projects tend to vary in nature, some may only last a month and others might run for two years. In order to deal with each one, we implement a flexible process with specifically designed operating procedures. The procedures scale in size depending on the project, ensuring shorter ones can be completed quicker and longer ones are given more testing. One process we live by is Continuous Development and it is truly a game changer. Once a developer checks-in their code, it automatically goes through another developer for code review. It ensures that our codes are the best they can be and are truly a team effort. We have been seeing a higher quality in code and products as a direct result.

My team and I did a lot of the initial development on the ClearScan carry-on baggage scanners. It was a big deal as we completely redesigned the viewing station, making it more appealing for our customers. It is very gratifying to have invested a large portion of your life into something that becomes relevant in all aspects of airport security. There is a huge sense of pride, knowing we are keeping people safe every day.

Our work revolves around providing the customer with the best service possible. We all have answered calls at 3am to fix airports or deal with problems, we've gone through log files on vacations, and we’ve flown at the drop of a hat to distant places to aid the customer with issues. We take great pride in delivering great service to the customer. We are ready to go and serve our customers in any way that we can at all times. There is a massive commitment in our group to understanding what our customers need, and responding to what they need when they need it, to make sure they stay our customers. I believe there is a sense of gratitude in doing something the right way and making sure the customer is satisfied. It means we are doing our job well, helping the company and our department succeed.

There is this African proverb, although I don't know if it's made up, that I first heard on the radio that says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." The only way to make a quality product is when everyone is pulling in the same direction. We listen to each other, make an effort to understand what the other person is saying and everybody feels like they are part of the process as a result. In my opinion, the best way to maintain the high standards in engineering for the customer is through hiring smart people, to listen to them and make sure everyone is focused on putting out the best possible product we can.

If you want to be successful in this job, you have got to work with people as much as the technology.
